CRITEC® TDX Series Receives “TVSS for LPS” Approval

The CRITEC® TDX Series of surge protection devices meets the new “TVSS for LPS” UL® listing criteria.

The CRITEC® TDX Series of surge protection devices from ERICO® meets the new “TVSS for LPS” UL® listing criteria. The new approval falls under the UL96A Master Label program, and acknowledges the CRITEC TDX – when installed at the service entrance – to qualify as part of the Lightning Protection System for Master Label Requirements. The CRITEC products are the first to be listed under this new approval.

This new category, TVSS for LPS, addresses applications that UL previously only accepted OWHX Listed Secondary Surge Arrestor products for under the UL96A Master Label program. OWHX listed products are specifically designed for applications upstream of the service entrance, and typically have limited surge protection performance. Under the new category, listed TVSS may be additionally marked “TVSS for LPS” if they:

  • Remain functional after the 10kA Surge Test as verified by the Measured Limiting Voltage Test; and
  • Comply with the over-voltage test at 137.5% of the nominal system voltage.

It is forecasted that this new category will remain in effect for at least 12 months. At that point, Edition 3 of UL1449 will introduce a new set of conditions to be met for this application. Any products Listed under UL1449 Ed 2, Type I / II should also be acceptable under the UL Master Label Program.

The CRITEC TDX series of surge protection devices provides surge ratings sufficient for even the most lightning-exposed, mission-critical sites. The TDX Series features three safety technologies to address catastrophic events, as well as TVSS failures due to normal aging; they include Transient Discriminating (TD) Technology, thermal intimate MOVs and over-current fusing. The unique combination of these technologies provides longer TVSS life, which is backed by ERICO's 10-year free replacement warranty.

The TDX family provides unparalleled life, protection and safety. The TDX50 has a 50kA 8/20µs surge rating and meets the requirements of IEEE C62.41.2 Scenario II, Exposure 2 service entrance protection. The TDX 100 and TDX 150 have 100kA 8/20µs and 150kA 8/20µs surge ratings, respectively, and meet the requirements of IEEE C62.41.2 Scenario II, Exposure 3 service entrance protection. The TDX unit’s 65kAIC short-circuit rating enables it to be directly connected to today’s commonly rated panels in accordance with NEC 285.6 (2002). It is NEMA® LS1 specified and independently tested and verified.

With the industry’s smallest profile, CRITEC TDX is ideal for installation between electrical panels, within stud walls or any tight location. The NEMA 4 enclosure is suitable for outdoor use and the unit requires no regular maintenance. For more information on the CRITEC TDX Series, call 800-677-9089.
